10 Things to Buy Before Studying Abroad

So you’re getting ready for your very first study abroad experience? Congratulations! While we are sure you’ve got your study abroad packing list ready with all the necessary items, there are always a few essentials that get overlooked. So, with suggestions from those who have studied abroad before, we’re covering a list of things to buy before studying abroad so you’re ready for anything!

Things to buy before studying abroad

1. Specific Hair Products

There are certain items that are simply smart things to get before studying abroad – your specific hair products are some of these items. Why? Because hair products are different around the globe. If you have a particular item that is tried and true for YOU, you will miss it when you’re caught in a more humid, or more dry, or more wet climate without your fav hair gel/spray/oil/etc. Why take the time to figure out what local products will work for you, when you already have a trusted product you can bring along.

2. Deodorant

When you study abroad, it can take time to figure out which stores to shop in and what products to buy. Or maybe you are studying abroad in a more remote location where certain “luxury” items will be hard to find. That’s why you don’t want to leave the US without ensuring you have enough quantity of crucial items to last you at least your first month. An example of one of the most crucial items to buy: DEODORANT!

3. A Breathable Rain Jacket

You will likely come across different weather patterns during your time abroad, but you don’t have the space to pack a variety of coats and jackets for each temperature. So pick something versatile like a breathable rain jacket. It can be worn for windy days, cool evenings, rainy weather, or even layered over heavier sweaters and jackets as needed.

4. A Durable Backpack and Daypack

Rolling luggage items aren’t always suited for a study abroad trip. Often you’ll be going on different excursions or weekend trips to make the most of your time abroad. That’s why a very essential thing to buy before study abroad is a durable backpack, plus a smaller daypack to carry important items with you instead of leaving them in the hostel.

5. Host Family Gifts

If you will be staying with a host family or have a specific academic advisor you’ll be assigned to, American themed gifts that you can bring with you are smart things to get before studying abroad. You’ll want to share with them a bit of your home country as well, and offer a token of your appreciation for all that they’ve done for you.   *link to article about host family gifts?

Don’t forget a goodbye gift for your host family, too!

6. A pair of comfy and versatile shoes/sandals

A study abroad packing list is not complete without having a solid pair of versatile and comfy shoes or sandals (or both). We aren’t talking about a good pair for walking, another good pair for nights out, another good pair for the beach. We are talking about one or two pairs of shoes or sandals that will cover all of the above! Especially needed for those weekend getaways.

» Chacos are great, and so are Tevas

7. A pack (or two) of face/body wipes

Let’s face it, when you travel, you get dirty. Falling asleep on planes, using the window as a pillow on trains, overnights in cabins with barely clean water supply….you’re going to want a way to keep your face and hands (and maybe even body) clean! Make sure to buy your favorite face wipes, hand wipes, body wipes, whatever wipes you need to help you stay hygienic while you travel.

8. Clothing you can layer

When you live in a different county, you can never be sure about the weather and how you will adjust to it. If you don’t already have clothes you can easily layer, now’s the time to get some. Leggings (or thermal underwear if you’re going somewhere cold!), tanks, tees, button or zip up sweaters, and at least one good hoodie are all things you need before studying abroad.

9. Other specific toiletries you can’t imagine going weeks without

Really think about this. What would you cry over if you land in a place and the local supermarkets or corner stores don’t stock your needed toiletries? These are the other crucial items to buy. Typically the list might include feminine hygiene products (especially tampons), medicated products, products for sensitive skin, or even toilet paper.

10. A comfort item

Homesickness is a bit inevitable wherever you go. No matter how much fun you are having, there will always be a few nights where you are missing the comforts of your own home. So bring a comfort with you – maybe a very American food item or sweet, your go-to movie or book, a small photo album of your favorite people — anything that can cheer you up like a good familiar hug would.

Your study abroad packing list is just getting started!

Besides your standard packing list, we hope we helped you figure out all the essential and overlooked things you need before studying abroad! And who knows, you may even find some new favorite items in your host city or town that you’ll want to bring back. So make sure to leave a little space in your luggage for the return trip home 😉

5 Best Backpacks for Study Abroad

As you prepare for your grand adventure overseas, you need to have your eye on your back — literally! Shopping amongst the best study abroad backpacks might feel overwhelming now, but being thoughtful while perusing your options will serve you well as you globetrot. Keep reading and get outfitted for studying abroad soon!

What to look for in study abroad backpacks

You’ve seen travellers at the airport or train stations with their oh-so-convenient and cool looking travel backpacks and now it’s time for you to get your first! But how do you know what makes a good study abroad backpack? There are some common factors you can look for that the best backpacks for study abroad will have, regardless if you want a minimalist travel backpack or one with greater storage capacity.

First and foremost is comfort! Padded straps and hip belts to bear weight and that won’t dig into your skin are very important when you could be wearing it for hours on end. Plus, since everybody’s body is different, no pack will feel the same on two people. It’s important to test out your backpack at a local store even if you will eventually buy it online.

Additional factors include

  • Lightweight design so you aren’t lugging around extra pounds you don’t need
  • Compression straps so you can adjust the size of your backpack depending on the size of your load (great for carry on versus checked baggage versatility) and protect your stuff so it all fits snug.
  • An easy to access top, side, or front zip panel to store things you might need in a jiffy
  • Closures with zippers so they can be locked (you never know where you might need to store your bag…and knowing everything is locked up will give you peace of mind.)
  • Quality material that won’t easily tear/wear, is water resistant, and will last for multiple adventures.
  • Top or front loading that makes packing for study abroad, and fitting everything you need, a breeze

Below we’ve listed some of our top choices for study abroad backpacks that include all of these necessary factors!

5. Kindle Paperwhite

kindle paperwhite

As much as books are great to feel in your hand as you turn the pages, chances are that the person you’re intending to give this study abroad gift basket to will not have a lot of room for many books. So how about giving them access to over a million titles and bestsellers from one device? The Kindle Paperwhite is the lightest of the range yet, and a single charge of the battery lasts for weeks. Enjoy millions of books on the go whenever and wherever with the built-in adjustable light. The Kindle Paperwhite now comes with Audible also, so stick your headphones in and listen, rather than read. Overall, you get 35% more expansion, which means an extra 15 liters on top of the 45 liters it already has — it is the best option on the market right now.

7. Yorepek Charging Travel Backpack

The backpack is very thoughtfully-designed, so you can thread your headphones through to use them while charging your phone. You can easily stow away your laptop and your other travel essentials, and still have room to spare.

8. Smartphone camera lens kit

smartphone camera lens kit for study abroad

While there are many affordable DSLR cameras available nowadays, there are many smartphones out there with a good quality camera anyway — so why not utilize that and add a smartphone camera lens to your phone? The Olloclip multi-device clip is one of the best in the market, with a 3-in-1 lens kit, including a super wide-angle to get those panoramic scene shots, a macro, and a fisheye. It’s super light to travel with, works with all camera apps and is fantastic for creating videos, live broadcasting, time-lapse, panorama and 360° VR. This kit provides everything you need to create high-quality memories of traveling abroad.

You might not think of it at the onset, but this phone upgrade is definitely one travel gift for a student studying abroad that they won’t forget.

9. Coordinate keychains

coordinate keychains

The latest gadgets and tech are great and everything, but sometimes adding a personal touch is what’s needed. People love personal and sentimental gifts, especially someone who’s leaving home. They may get homesick sometimes and miss you, so these personalized coordinate keychains are the perfect, quality gift to remind them of home in a lovely way. Having the coordinates of where they’re from and a compass engraved into the metal will remind them of pleasant memories of home whilst they’re away. You can also engrave other words etched into the gift; these are the perfect final addition to your epic travel gift basket.

Don’t forget the basket!

But wait, no study abroad gift basket is complete without…the actual basket. Take a look at this highly recommended Wicker Basket: the strong folding double handles make this basket particularly unique and the natural design ensures that the basket is also eco-friendly. However, I wouldn’t recommend attempting to put the carry-on luggage in the basket!

Another recommendation that would make a unique gift basket is to use the carry-on luggage as the gift basket! It makes for a really fun surprise when your traveling friend or family member receives the gift, then opens it up for even more thoughtful treasures before they depart on their travels.

Make your study abroad gift basket one to remember!

These steps have been put together to help you choose the perfect gifts to include in your study abroad gifts basket with ease. Whether they’re off to study in Europe or further afield, make sure that your study abroad gift basket to them is one to remember. They will appreciate the thoughtfulness, time, and effort that goes into creating the luxury basket full of gifts, and leaves them feeling prepared for their adventure abroad. What more could you want in a travel gift for a student studying abroad?

10 Things to Include in a Travel Survival Kit Gift

Do you have a loved one studying abroad in the upcoming future? It’s natural to want to give them a parting gift or two to help make the transition as smooth as possible (and to avoid them forgetting about you, picking up their life, and never coming back—right?!). 😉

Creating the perfect study abroad survival kit as a gift can be challenging. Trying to find the perfect balance between sentimental, useful, and travel-friendly is no easy feat.

That’s why we’re here!

If you’re struggling while building your travel survival kit gift, look no further. We’ve curated the perfect combination of gift ideas, full of items that are practical, good quality, and come in a range of prices to fit any budget.

10 items to add to your travel survival kit gift

1. Microfiber Towel

microfiber towel for travel survival kit gift

There’s nothing worse than having to pack a wet towel. But when you shower late at night and don’t know the next time you’ll have access to a washing machine or dryer, you don’t have much choice!

Microfiber towels are the perfect practical travel survival kit to help solve this issue. The towel can hold 4 times its weight in water and can dry up to 10 times faster than traditional cotton towels! The towel is also extremely light, and packs up very easily meaning it’s not going to take up precious space in the student’s luggage. The only thing you need to worry about is what size to get!

2. Sleeping Face Mask, Inflatable Neck Pillow, and Ear Plugs

inflatable neck pillow, ear plugs, sleep mask for study abroad

Sleeping in a new bed, experiencing the dorm or common room lifestyle, and frequent traveling via train, plane, and automobile, means student sleep schedules are often interrupted on study abroad trips. As a study abroad student however, sleep is of utmost importance! Not only do you need to focus on learning, but also having the energy to explore new cities and meet new people.

To improve the students’ chances of getting a good night’s sleep, consider including a few sleep tools in your gift! We’ve found a great travel set which includes a face mask, an inflatable neck pillow (which inflates automatically), and ear plugs—all simple ways to add more comfort and consistency to a sleep routine.

3. Anker Portable Charger

portable charger for study abroad

When you’re out all day using your phone for photos, maps, and communication with the rest of your group, it’s very easy to drain your phone’s battery. Compounding the issue is the fact that study abroad trips often entail long hours when you aren’t exactly sure when you’ll have access to an outlet for 5+ hours to charge your phone.

For the student’s safety, and your peace of mind, we definitely suggest adding a portable charger to your travel survival kit gift. The Anker portable charger is a top-seller on Amazon with almost 5 stars and over 17, 000 reviews. The charger is small, and offers at least 1 charge on almost all common phone models in 3-4 hours!

4. Packing Cubes

Any frequent traveler knows the constant battle of trying to fit all your favorite clothes in your luggage, not to mention the struggle of finding a specific item of clothing without it looking like there was an explosion.

If this sounds like your beloved traveler, you’ll want to add packing cubes to your present. The cubes allow you to fit more into your luggage, and allow for better organization (suggest having them put all of their shirts in one cube, their shorts in another, etc.).

5. Universal Travel Adapter

travel adapter for study abroad

If the study abroad trip is anywhere outside of your home country, the student is going to need a universal travel adapter. Instead of buying individual adapters for each different country, a universal adapter allows you to purchase one device which will last throughout all of the student’s travel adventures.

The Mibote universal travel adapter has international capability (US/EU/AU/UK plugs which cover over 160 countries), high power (supports charging items like phones, laptops, and cameras), and built in safety features which help avoid electric shock. The variety of ports also means you can use it to charge multiple USB devices at the same time! This truly is the most necessary and practical study abroad survival kit gift.

6. Professional HD Camera Lens Kit for Phone

cell phone camera accessories professional hd camera lens kit for phone study abroad

It’s unlikely your student is planning on packing a professional camera on their trip. They’re bulky, heavy, and expensive—all things study abroad students often try to avoid! However, it is likely that the student is going to be taking a ton of photos from their adventure, and sometimes phone camera quality doesn’t quite do the experience justice.

A portable phone camera lens is the perfect happy medium. It is essentially a professional camera lens the student can attach to their phone for improved camera quality and zoom. It’s small and portable, and there isn’t as much risk with porting it around wherever they go.

Just make sure you know their phone model when purchasing so you can ensure compatibility!

7. Uber Gift Card

We’re going to go out on a limb here and say that the student is likely not going to be renting a car on their study abroad trip. Car rentals are an unnecessary expense when most of the trip will already be planned and coordinated.

If the student plans on doing any activities or adventures outside of the study abroad schedule though, gifting them an Uber gift card as part of your travel survival kit is a great way to ensure comfortable, safe, and economic transportation.

Please note you may want to confirm that Uber is available in the country or countries they are traveling to before purchasing!

8. Kindle Paperwhite

kindle for study abroad

No one wants the bulkiness of physical books when traveling, but with the possibility of a lot of down-time on flights and long drives, reading is a great pastime to encourage, especially if the student is an avid reader!

The Kindle Paperwhite is a thin, glare-free, and waterproof digital reading solution that reads like real paper. The charge is also said to last weeks! Consider loading the Kindle with a couple of books, or pairing it with an Amazon and/or Kindle gift card so the student can get started on reading right away.

Further, if the study abroad experience includes courses that require textbooks, this Kindle is the perfect addition in that it helps the student avoid the bulk and weight of these physical books!

9. HP Sprocket Portable Printer

portable photo printer for study abroad

This is a very unique and fun addition that your recipient is sure to adore! This portable photo printer is similar in size to a phone and allows students to print photos instantly from their phone or social media via Bluetooth connection. This is an awesome way for the student to make and share memories with any friends they make along the way!

Bonus suggestion—grab a travel journal and put a couple photos of you and their other and family and friends in the front of the journal with a few words of advice, encouragement, or love. This is the perfect way to add a sentimental touch to your survival kit, and the student can continue to use the journal to record their experience, and as a spot to put their printed photos!

10. Carry-On Suitcase from Away

away carry on study abroad

Though this is by far the most expensive item on the list, a suitcase is not the place to skimp on quality.

A good quality suitcase is imperative on a study abroad trip, especially if it is a lengthy trip. We’ve all been there—trying to awkwardly push down a suitcase handle that just won’t seem to collapse properly, or pulling a suitcase behind us that feels like it’s 100 lbs. because the wheels aren’t working.

The Away suitcase not only features 360 spinner wheels, but a hidden laundry bag, a TSA-approved combination lock, an interior compression system, and an ejectable battery that charges your phone. The carry-on size is also perfectly designed to fit the overhead bin of most major airlines, a size which is perfect for students who don’t want the burden of checking a bag and worrying about the possibility of lost luggage.

This is also the perfect place to pack the other items in your study abroad survival guide kit!

Make your travel survival kit gift useful, awesome, and personal!

Creating a study abroad survival kit is the perfect send-off for your loved one, and we hope this list gave you some inspiration for crafting your own! It’s important to make your survival kit practical, with good quality gifts the student will actually use and love.

You may also want to consider including a few personal touches like photos, a gift that reflects their hobbies or interests, or a digital gift card to their favorite (global) coffee chain. Adding a little personality to the kit in a way that doesn’t sacrifice ease of use and/or practicality is a great way to make the student truly feel loved and understood!
